Stringz EMB doesn’t flood the speakers with a lot of virtuosic white noise manipulated into a synthesized melody in the first few bars of his new single “Perfect.” He isn’t isolating himself from the beat when he starts to sing, and his COVID-inspired lyrical content doesn’t wallow in its own jaded narrative about pandemic culture and the process of trying to record a hot track in lockdown. Stringz EMB doesn’t have time for any of the nonsense his rivals are up in arms with this December; for his final contribution to the music of 2020, he’s invoking the spirit of soul balladry and getting downright decadent with his lyrical execution.
“Perfect” is the kind of song that makes you start unwinding even when life has got you tense, but it doesn’t go about relaxing us with the typical features. Other than the sly beat and the harmony’s relative familiarity to the pop model, the way this single unfolds is much stealthier and under the direct command of Stringz EMB’s vocal, particularly in its most passionate of moments. The instrumentation isn’t filler, but it exists only to serve the singer, similarly to what a lot of the old school vocal pop crooners would work with some seventy years ago – but with one heck of a heady twist.
I hadn’t listened to Stringz EMB before I got turned on to “Perfect” this winter, but having caught a pretty good glimpse at what his talents can yield when he’s put in the right recording circumstances, I was left wondering just how his work has managed to escape my attention this year. 2020 brought with it a startlingly productive calendar for Stringz EMB (all things considered, at least), and with any luck he’ll be able to duplicate his output in 2021 for the pleasure of fans and critics everywhere.
